Left-Handers Day

Today is International Left-Handers Day.

People often see left-handedness as a disability.

I remember my little brother being approximately 18months old when he started to show left-handed dominance. This very quickly became a BIG deal. My grandparents insisted that my mother "not allow" my baby brother to use his left hand for various activities,  such as eating, drawing, or even holding objects. They very much insisted that she remove any item that he might happen to grab with his left hand and place it in is right. WHY???? We never did get an answer.

Here are some facts about international Left-Handers Day:

International Left-handers Day was began in 1976, Dean R Campbell is its founder, whose birthday also happens to be on August 13th.

Every year August 13th is International Left-Handers day

It has been estimated that only 7%-10% of our worlds population is left-handed

All manual devices are designed for use by right handed people (cars included), thus making it very difficult if not impossible for left-handers to use. they often have to make adjustments or purchase specialty items,

Some famous left-handers include : Barack Obama, George Bush, Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and Michelangelo.

Society needs to learn that although being left-handed is rare it is special, and we need to embrace it. Children should not be discouraged from being left-handed.
